Instagram Reels vs. YouTube Shorts vs. TikTok UI Overlay Comparison (1080x1920)
Compare the exact 916Studio overlay presets for Reels, Shorts, and TikTok, calculate their shared area, and build platform-specific caption layouts.
A vertical frame can be the same size on three platforms while the usable space is different. A caption that clears one app's bottom panel can collide with another app's description, and a face near the right edge can sit behind interaction buttons. The source video is still 1080 by 1920 pixels; the problem is the interface drawn over it. Separate the dimensions of the media from the dimensions of the region where essential information should appear.
This comparison documents the planning profiles currently implemented in 916Studio. They are explicit editorial presets, not a claim that Instagram, YouTube, or TikTok guarantees one permanent rectangle for every account, device, language, or placement. Use them to compare layouts consistently, then inspect the actual publishing destination. The arithmetic below is exact for these presets. The interface coverage of a live app remains variable, especially when descriptions expand, commerce controls appear, or an advertisement uses additional components.
1. Use one coordinate system for the three profiles
Set the origin at the upper-left corner of a 1080 by 1920 canvas. Horizontal coordinates increase to the right and vertical coordinates increase downward. A top margin of 220 pixels therefore places the upper safe boundary at y equals 220. A right margin of 120 pixels places the right boundary at x equals 960, not at x equals 120. Recording boundaries as left, top, right, and bottom coordinates helps editors reproduce the layout without confusing excluded margins with the remaining usable width.
Keep the master artwork full bleed. The guide does not tell you to crop away the danger bands or letterbox the upload into a smaller rectangle. Background color, nonessential texture, and expendable motion can continue behind interface elements. Reserve the protected region for eyes, important hand actions, product labels, and text that the viewer needs to understand the video. A small margin between essential content and the boundary is useful because a glyph shadow or animated overshoot can extend farther than the text box itself.

| Profile | Top | Right | Bottom | Left | Remaining rectangle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok standard | 130 | 140 | 350 | 44 | x 44–940; y 130–1570 |
| TikTok Shop toggle | 130 | 140 | 484 | 44 | x 44–940; y 130–1436 |
| Instagram Reels | 220 | 120 | 420 | 0 | x 0–960; y 220–1500 |
| YouTube Shorts | 140 | 130 | 380 | 0 | x 0–950; y 140–1540 |
3. Understand the separate 900 by 1400 universal box
916Studio also draws a centered 900 by 1400 reference box. On this canvas it starts at x equals 90 and y equals 260, ending at x equals 990 and y equals 1660. That makes it a convenient compositional reference, but it is not contained inside all three platform profiles. Its right edge reaches beyond the TikTok standard right boundary by fifty pixels, and its lower edge reaches below the Reels boundary by one hundred sixty pixels. Do not assume that a label called universal removes the need to inspect the colored overlays.
If you want essential content inside both the universal reference and all three standard profiles, intersect those regions too. The result is x from 90 to 940 and y from 260 to 1500, measuring 850 by 1240 pixels. With the Shop bottom exclusion, the height is 1176 pixels. This smaller region is useful for a reusable title or a simple character demonstration, but it can be unnecessarily restrictive for decorative footage. Choose the protection level for the importance of each element instead of forcing every pixel into one box.
4. Test the full subtitle rectangle, including animated motion
A subtitle anchor point can be safe while the words around it are not. Suppose your two-line caption panel is 760 pixels wide and 160 pixels tall. Centering it horizontally at x equals 540 produces edges at 160 and 920, which fit the standard shared horizontal range. To keep its bottom inside y equals 1500, its center cannot fall below 1420. If the panel bounces downward by twenty pixels, reserve those twenty pixels as well. Test the maximum animated extent, not just the resting position shown in a still preview.
Do the same check with the longest actual line in the script. Font size, tracking, stroke, and language can change its width. A layout tested with three short English words does not establish that a longer translated sentence will fit. Reflow captions into meaningful phrases before reducing type size. When the visual demonstration occupies the middle of the frame, split the caption timing or adjust the composition rather than moving every subtitle into a lower band that only appears empty in the editor.
5. Decide when to make separate platform exports
One common layout is efficient when the video has a centered subject, short captions, and no interface-sensitive callout. Separate versions become worthwhile when an important product label sits near the bottom, a pointing gesture addresses a specific button, or a commerce component occupies extra space. Keep the footage and narration shared while storing caption position and graphic visibility in distinct sequences or composition variants. This avoids repeatedly moving objects in one timeline and accidentally exporting a TikTok-specific placement as the Reels version.
For paid placements, use the current platform resources for the actual advertising format. TikTok's in-feed ad documentation explicitly varies the safe-zone resources by format and extra components. Google also provides safe-area resources for video advertising. Those are useful publishing references, but an ad template should not be presented as a universal organic-interface measurement. Check the placement, language direction, and current preview, then keep the chosen template with the campaign project. The tool's editable planning workflow supplements that review rather than replacing platform requirements.
6. Scale guides without stretching the source frame
The downloadable guide is 1080 by 1920, so it matches a Full HD vertical sequence at one hundred percent scale. For a 720 by 1280 sequence, multiply every coordinate by two thirds and keep the same aspect ratio. A 420-pixel bottom margin becomes 280 pixels; a 220-pixel top margin becomes approximately 146.7 pixels. For a 2160 by 3840 master, multiply by two. Scale the whole overlay uniformly instead of adjusting horizontal and vertical dimensions independently, which would distort the boundary relationships.
A landscape or unusually cropped source needs a different decision: how the media fills the vertical sequence. The overlay cannot recover a face that has been cropped out before the guide is applied. Establish your crop first, then place essential elements inside the selected regions. The browser preview is a planning aid, not a frame-accurate guarantee of every editing application's fit or fill setting. Check the exported video's actual dimensions and inspect the final composite, especially if the source includes baked-in subtitles or borders.
7. Keep a short, repeatable publication review
Review a first frame, a busy middle frame, and the final CTA with every selected profile visible. Then play the entire video rather than assuming three still frames cover moving captions and gestures. Use a phone-sized preview to check legibility, and inspect the current in-app publishing view where available. Keep the rendered planning grid out of the final delivery: disable its track before export and check the encoded file once. A guide left visible can make an otherwise finished tutorial look like an unfinished internal review.
Maintain a small review note containing the sequence size, selected profiles, Shop toggle state, caption panel dimensions, and date of the in-app check. If the platform interface changes, you can identify affected layouts instead of guessing which exports used which assumptions. The useful outcome is not a claim that a video is safe forever. It is a documented layout that protects the important information under known planning conditions and can be revised when the real destination reveals a different obstruction.
Frequently asked questions
Are these official permanent platform margins?
No. The numbers describe 916Studio's current planning presets. Interfaces vary by placement, device, language, and additional controls; inspect the current target app and use official ad templates for advertising requirements.
Does the 900 by 1400 box fit all three profiles?
No. The centered box extends beyond some profile boundaries. Intersect it with the selected overlays if you want to satisfy both references.
Can I use one caption layout everywhere?
Often, if it fits the relevant intersection and remains readable. Make separate variants when commerce panels, gestures, or platform-specific callouts need different placement.
Does the checker publish or render my video?
No. It previews guides and exports a transparent PNG overlay. You assemble and export the actual video in an editor, and review it in the destination platform.
